Luke 10:41-42
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed- or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
The life of a woman and even a man today is not all that different from that of Mary and Martha in the New Testament. Like Mary you long to sit at the Lord’s feet… but the daily demands of a busy world just won’t leave you alone. Like Martha, you love Jesus and want to serve him yet you struggle with weariness, resentment, and feeling of inadequacy.
Do you feel like Martha sometimes or rather always, you really would love to have some intimate time with the Lord but from since you stepped out of bed and boom! You have a thousand and one urgent duties screaming your name. The Kids need to be woken up and on time, breakfast, laundry, preparing for the work or business, friends, visitors, the church, the list is endless.
Martha had the Lord visiting, she was hosting the Lord. This sounds handful I can’t imagine all she needed to handle to ensure Christ and His team were comfortable and to crown it all a good meal. Mary on the other hand has such a nerve, one that will be rebuked even by our ancestors and dubbed the highest bad manners and un-lady-like manners- to sit pretty in the company of men as your sister frantically serves them.
Jesus is coming amid your busy life, to extend the same invitation. Tenderly, he invites you to choose ‘the better part’ – a joyful life of intimacy with him that flows naturally into loving service. To go about your duties with the overflow of joy and grace which is only derived from sitting at the feet of Jesus.
In Matt 11:28-30, He says,
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for am gentle and kind at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
As we draw closer to Jesus in an intimate fellowship, he deepens our devotion, strengthens our service, helping us to strike a balance where we can do both with less stress and greater joy. He is the best teacher to what lies ahead of us in the day as he says we should learn from him for he is gentle and kind at heart.
May you find intimacy with Christ in the business of your life.
