Is It Possible to Get Back On Our Feet After These Circumstances?

Paul’s message to the Philippians is my go-to Scripture to move on.

Brothers and sisters, I do not consider that I have made it my own yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the [heavenly] prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14

As hard as it may be, our past happened and there is very little we can do about it – unless we have powers to undo time. Recognizing this, that we cannot change the past, is a critical step towards helping us to move forward. Instead of getting stuck on what we cannot change, why not focus our energies on what we can change – the future?

Saul (later to be Paul) was a murderer, who delighted in the persecution of Christians at the time. In fact, his conversion happened while he was on his way to Damascus to persecute more Christians. Yet he says that one thing he does, he forgets the past so he can reach forward to what lies ahead.

When we are hung up so much on the past, we will have no time for the future. While it is not an easy task to accomplish, and may take years if not decades to fully experience the healing from the past, we must start today, now!

Good news is, we don’t have to do it on our own – we can get all the help we need. For some the help entails professional counselling and therapy; for others it will be spiritual strengthening; while for others it will be change of environment (work and residence) – whatever it takes for us to move on, let’s do it.
