Why Do Bad Things Happen To Good People – Biblical Inspiration for Authors (Walter Mwania)

God is Innocent

The faith of many people is shaken when they experience nasty things like the death of a loved one, accidents, disease, sickness, murder, rape, genocide, ethnic conflicts, betrayal, etc. Many such people grow lukewarm in their faith in God while others abandon God altogether. Others question, “If God is good why he allowed that pain?” “If God is all-powerful, why doesn’t he deal with Satan once and for all?”

Yet I proclaim that “God is Innocent!” Seven times in Genesis 1, it is recorded that all that God created was very good. Lucifer (later called Satan) was perfect in beauty, was an anointed Cherubim that covers.

“You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; You were on the holy mountain of God; You walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones”

Ezekiel 28:14.

Yet, when he sinned against God he was dethroned and cast out of heaven into the earth (see Ezekiel 28:13-17).

All that God created was very good. There was no pain, diseases, sickness, catastrophes, or any evil that you can name. God also gave man dominion over the earth, but the man lost this dominion to Satan when he disobeyed God by eating fruits from the forbidden tree,

“but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die”

(Genesis 2:17).

Hence, when Satan was tempting Jesus he said of the kingdoms of the world,

“All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me”

(Matt 4:9).

So, it is sin occasioned by man’s disobedience to God’s instructions that brought forth evil into the world and in the lives of men.
Yes, through Christ’s death and resurrection on the cross and by His blood, were redeemed from all evil. We are empowered to live this life as it is in heaven. We have power over evil, disease, sickness, and death, yea, even if we sleep yet we will rise again. Our hope is on the finished work of the Cross, for we shall reign together with Christ forever and ever.

“Whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world our faith”

(1 John 5:4).
